Abba Gold Tops UK Album Charts

Gold, the Greatest Hits compilation from Swedish super group Abba, has become the oldest album ever to reach the top spot in the UK album charts.

Pushing Coldplay's Viva La Vida or Death And All His Friends down to number two, Gold is proof that the hits of Abba really are Super Troupers in their own right.

With sales topping 26 million, Gold is the fourth biggest-selling album of all time in the UK and was first released in 1992. This is not the first time this year that we have thanked Abba for their music, the soundtrack to the the Abba-inspired film Mamma Mia! sat proudly in the number one spot this July.

In the singles chart All Summer Long, the Lynard Skynard inspired Rock jam by Kid Rock, ended Dizzee Rascal's four week reign at number one.
Kid Rock's album, Rock N Roll Jesus, also made a giant leap of more than 140 places, landing comfortably at number four in the album charts.

With Dizzee's Dance With Me now at number two, The Script follows at number three with The Man Who Can't Be Moved. Katy Perry's I Kissed a Girl is this weeks number four and American Idol winner Jordon Sparks rounds up the top five with her single No Air.

It makes me laugh and it makes my cry and it gets me out of a stress if I’m in a stress, and, if I’m in a good place then it will make me in a better place. It’s all about the emotion, it’s all about the feeling where music takes you to and what affect it has on you.
  2. Taio CruzTaio Cruz: ilikemusic because... It’s my life and it’s the air that I breathe. It calms me when I’m feeling uptight and it’s there for me when I want to party if I want to listen to something up tempo, it’s just amazing in any situation. That’s why I like music!

  4. Ellen, Los CampesinosEllen, Los Campesinos: ilikemusic because... It’s the best form of escapism that you can have wherever you are. You could be completely miserable or waiting for a bus and put on any song that inspires you and you can escape into a little world, well that’s what I tend to do anyway.
  5. RobynRobyn: ilikemusic because... It’s the way I want to express myself. It’s not a choice. It’s just always been there. It’s just what I do.
